I've been thinking about why the Rei x Arsenio ship feels so much weaker than the Sauro x Arsenio ship, and I think I put most of the blame in the manga's tone shift. This manga started out feeling primarily like a comedy. The beginning of Arsenio's attraction to Rei was "hey, look at how cute and naive this girl is because she's actually a boy who isn't very conscious of the fact that he's got a very attractive female body, and sometimes that puts him/her and Arsenio into some risque situations. ;)" By the time Sauro was properly introduced, the manga had taken a couple steps back from its comedic "turn the girl back into a boy and defeat the perverted demon king" premise and moved on to include more serious concepts like gender identity and sexuality and how religion can affect your view of the world (although comedy is still definitely present). So Sauro and Arsenio were given a basis for their relationship with real work put into it about friendship and betrayal and redemption, while Rei and Arsenio missed out because those sorts of stakes just aren't super necessary in comedy-based story-telling.

After I read the prequel story.. Sorry Rei.. I ship Sauro x Arsenio now. I'm so scatter brained I read the spin off without realizing it's the same Arsenio.

I'm so frustrated with Asahi. Not because he hasn't told Mirai what he's involved with, but because he's so spectacularly TERRIBLE at keeping his job a secret. Like, I get it, when you're fighting the forces of evil it's a standard to keep your loved ones in the dark so they don't become targets or put themselves in danger. But that only works if your loved ones don't become suspicious of you and it is glaringly OBVIOUS that Asahi's job is something weird and dangerous. OF COURSE, Mirai isn't going to confide in Asahi when he starts experiencing problems. The seeds of mistrust have already been planted in their relationship, and Asahi put them there himself. Either tell your loved ones the truth or make sure to lie convincingly, because you are sure to ruin your relationships otherwise.

    Pacgirl July 27, 2020 3:50 am

When you say it like that you have a great point. I always laugh when I watch these secret hero things and the hero is like "I must not tell so my family or lover won't be in danger." Then even when their family gets hurt or involved in some way, they still don't tell them. I would say it's more dangerous to not tell someone about the danger they're getting in. I mean if my friend was a hero and I was unknowingly getting very involved, I'd rather be warned than get killed one day as I take a casual walk cause I wasn't being cautious. XD

I wonder if there will be any repercussions for all the message board rumors. Like yeah, Jungwoo is an airhead and his dad didn't seem to care too much about what he was doing for a long time, but surely you can't slander the son of the CEO without some sort of consequence, no? If the dad's nepotism is strong enough to give his unqualified child a high-end job, does that mean it is also strong enough to punish employees who are besmirching the family name (if unknowingly)?

    Laito Sakamaki July 18, 2020 5:37 am

I don’t think he even needs to use under handed methods to punish them! Even if it wasn’t his son being talked about the employees would still need to be punished, what they are doing goes against work conduct, they’re harassing their workmate with slander! That already is grounds for dismissal, they can be lawfully fired and sued!

I feel so mislead. I realize it's probably an issue with the translation and not the manga itself, but I definitely felt a sense of relief when I thought "thank god, he's 20 and a university student." I mean, I started reading this assuming he was a high school student, and I don't particularly dislike adult-teenager fictional(!) relationships. But it's like going to buy something, being told it's on sale, but then finding out the sale actually ended. Like, cool, I already expected to pay the full price anyway, but why do you gotta get my hopes up like that?

Just a guy July 15, 2020 6:15 pm

I realize that this is probably a very unpopular opinion, but I hope that Yuiji and Yamato remain as friends. Do I think they'd make a good couple? Absolutely. Do I want Yamato to be happy no matter what? Hell yeah. But just once, I'd like to read a shounen-ai or yaoi where a gay man manages to have a close, supportive friendship with another guy that doesn't become romantic while he goes on to find love with someone else. Homosexual people need good friends too, not just love interests. But I think I'll be okay with whatever happens. In the meantime, does anybody happen to know any manga that's like what I described?

    Kyatto July 15, 2020 6:26 pm

Wow, you just took the words out of my mouth. I was thinking that too! I mean, they are good together. But I totally love to see just 2 bro’s being friends without any hindrance that one likes guys.

I was reading a BL manga I had lend from a friend but I only read the first vol of it, but it really gave me the same vibes as this one. It’s basically about a guy that transfers to a new school and meets a loner, who’s a loner because rumors of being gay. But rather than shying away from the loner, he gets more interested in him. I only read the first vol so I don’t know if they end up being a couple or just support each other without the hindrance that one likes guys.

yep, i think the same. I would really like if they remain as friends, and Yamato moving on of his crush and finding a new love

    Lostdonut July 15, 2020 7:13 pm

i mean.. yamoto does have friends like that too, like Seki. The thing is, this is a romance series, it makes more sense that the two characters the series focus more on end up being the couple in the end. If the story is told from Seki’s point of view, it would have been a friendship series I guess.

Also, this series already started out with Yamoto falling for a straight guy, not working out and moving on... it would seen odd if the next romantic interest turn out to be another straight guy that didnt work out and he had to move on from.

    nandemonaiya July 16, 2020 10:39 am

idk about manga, but manhwa and manhua have a lot of gay MCs with supportive male friends, e.g. Here U Are, For Your Love, Starting With a Lie. Always a sucker for healthy friendships in my comics <3

    nandemonaiya July 16, 2020 10:43 am

Thing is, those friends were never set up as love interests from the outset though.
Only one I know where the "I'm pining over my straight friend but I'll get with someone else" plan has a happily ever after is Playtime With Hakdo, iirc.

Haha, yeah, that's why I said I "hope" they remain friends and not I "think" they'll remain friends, since it definitely seems like the manga is building up to them becoming a couple.

That being said, despite the fact that this manga is literally called "Love Story," the romance aspect of it wasn't what got me so invested in the story. There's tons of BL about boys falling in love with their male friends and those friends eventually loving them back. What I enjoyed most was the focus on Yamato's desire for company and for his male peers to understand and accept him despite the stigma of his sexuality and Yuiji's role in fulfilling that desire. I felt like that was pretty unique. I don't think I've ever read or heard of a BL manga that chooses to explore the social/emotional struggles of a gay man as its main plot, rather than his love life, and I really would like to see that done at least once, even if it's not this manga that does it.

That's fair. I suppose I'm just tired (speaking as an aro/ace person) of seeing special, good quality, emotionally intimate relationships that go beyond typical friendship and having authors and fans insist that two people must be romantically involved to maintain that level of closeness. Makes me wish that life-changing friendship-type relationships could get just a little bit more love and representation from people.

I have to disagree. No disrespect to your opinion. Yes, there are thousands of bl mangas out there. But, if you're really talking about a nuanced, realistic mangas depicting same sex love, Japanese manga or manwa is definitely not the place. There are quite few works that are more lgbt representative, but majority are thematic to appeal to female readers. And hardly there is focus on real life problems, or human like characters or arcs. In that thousands 95% you can just draw different faces and basically all have same stories. It's just checking off the boxes. But I'm so lucky to stumble upon this manga I've been dying to see two just very normal boys falling in love, without any of the ukeseme trope, a love rival, a pessimistic naive uke, more feminine uke tropes, one being more assertive aware n all that. It's not for lgbt but this, this is a gem. Yuiji n Yamato will be a power couple. So far she didn't stereotype both of them into fitting any of the themes of bl/shonen. And I hope she never changes Yuiji or Yamato to fit those characteristics. I love them as real humans. But falling in love ? Why shouldn't they? I don't quote any this niche for showing others about homosexual love, there are like movies made out there like cmbyn, love Simon, or old guard things like that. Not stuff like a guy like you or bj Alex or anything because it's too detached from real life interaction but this I will recommend. It's very natural n not forced. Everyone needs a special well crafted love story like this. I strongly recommend you to search jackverglas on Tumblr and read their posts. Will definitely give you a new perspective. I think it's uplifting n inspiring to see how their will bloom into something more than friendship. The way they are it'd be odd if one of them didn't feel that way. Also there's lot of hidden suspense n Yuijis pov is not shown. So when the pieces come together it will make sense.

did Masaki smile at all in this manga? Someone please correct me with links/page numbers if I'm wrong.

I can already tell that the savior is going to be her bitch-friend and I hate her already.

Just a guy July 14, 2020 5:40 am

Honestly, I can't tell if the mangaka is purposefully ignoring how spines work for the sake of smut or if she has made a joke out of the whole thing at this point and is trying to see how many ridiculous positions she can draw the uke in before somebody tells her to stop.

Just a guy July 13, 2020 5:02 pm

Does anyone else feel like the Masaki we see here and the Masaki from the first manga are a little bit like different people? Maybe his character was tweaked a little so this story could run more smoothly, but I feel like this Masaki would think it's too much work to blackmail someone and would just beat them up until they agreed to date him. Maybe I'm just thrown off by the fact that Masaki hasn't really smiled at all in this manga, but was pretty friendly (although in an aggressive and unpleasant way) in the other story.

    GoldenMochi July 13, 2020 5:34 pm

yeah, i get the same feeling. ig is to build the character in a more deep and sympathetic way. I hated him in the first story, but now i can know him and understand him - ofc that doesn't mean his violent actions can be washed off.
