But I do think that his belief that she only pities him comes from a very misguided place. She cares as much if not more about him as he does her but all he seems to be able to see in her feelings for him (platonically or not) is pity. I understand that he is very self-deprecating right now and that this makes it hard to stay objective when interacting with others, but the whole crux in their relationship has always been that he somehow assumed the worst of her feelings toward him? And while I sympathize with him I don't think that this has ever been justified

Oh my former athlete heart just broke for him. Nobody understands how it feels to put not just hours but days, years of your life to something and for all of that to be lost in a single moment. You lose everything. Oh my god, and then on top of it his purpose was to make himself a better fit for her. Oh i absolutely get why he’s so lost on how to deal with her. His sense of self had to have shattered so much.
