Okay, so there it is. The king was born with congenital insensitivity to pain. It's funny how the author picked a real & rare genetic condition as the basis to create the character of the king. Not to be confused with the generalized loss of sense brought about by an illness like diabetes, people with this condition can feel everything (touch, temperature, etc.), except for pain, or extreme stimuli that cause pain. Lots of you have asked why the king is brutal. Well, turns out he never knew what pain was to begin with. To him, breaking an ankle, or stabbing/flogging someone is not a big deal, because for him, it's probably no different from feeling someone giving a tap or hard slap in the back. If you recall back when the king broke Heun's ankle, he said "Had I known you would be in so much pain, I wouldn't have done it". That line infuriated everyone, coz duh, why wouldn't you know something so obvious? Now we know, he really didn't know it. This is one of the root causes that makes him over the top heartless. But having witnessed the process of Heun breaking apart & dying of suicide 100 yrs ago, he started to learn to empathize. And he is still continuing to learn in this lifetime too. But as expected, change can't come overnight, it comes in stages. At least for now, I'll give him a bit of credit for his willingness to learn. And finally, this inability to feel pain is not something to be envious about. Being able to feel pain is essential to life. If you are robbed of that, you are basically being given a very severe handicap & you have to be extremely vigilant about the state of your well being at all times. And no, real people with the condition don't turn into a psycho like the king. They have their own portion of suffering too, although not in terms of physical pain. This is just fantasy story after all. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭

ohhhh thanks for explaining it, makes more sense now. I'm glad that he is showing some remorse and I sincerely hope that he learns empathy and also HOW TO BE A GOOD FUCKING DAD

i have a question, does not being able to experience pain make you unable to emphatize with others? seems like that is the case with the king

i think so, maybe it makes the king feel entitled or something like invincible

Same question/concern. I feel like he used it as an excuse to not empathize with others. Maybe because he's royalty that he chose to do so. Because he's been alive for years/decades, why would he still believe that the others don't feel pain like he does. He himself knows he doesn't know what pain feels like, he knows there's something wrong with him. And he chose to ignore how others could possibly feel.

So like OP said, it might be a reason but it's still not an excuse to be a tyrant and merciless as the emperor.

Well, I guess if you can't feel pain, you will never experience how awful it is, so you can't quite empathize with others who feel pain, because you don't even know the concept of pain to begin with. So the king now is learning to empathize through experiencing emotional pain (having seen Heun broke apart & losing him in the end). It's also worth noting that the king described his hurt feelings when Heun chastised him, as his heart freezing to the point of breaking. Kinda make sense, for someone who doesn't know physical pain to describe the feeling using temperature. Though he really should not know how it feels like to freeze or to break, imho.

The point is, he probably know there is a thing called pain. But he doesn't know what it is coz he never experiences it. And he is a king, being brought up sheltered all his life, he probably doesn't have a lot of exposure to see suffering. Try to put yourself in his situation. There are certain things that you just have to learn in life through experiencing it. Take for example, a certain rich & powerful someone whose face is always orange, who has lived a life full of privilege. He never has to go grocery shopping even once in his life. So in his ignorance, he said you need to get you ID checked when you go grocery shopping. So out of touch with reality he was, he could never empathize with the average people who has to worry about paying bills & day-to-day real life worries. Does he not know there is suffering? Of course he knows, he just can't empathize with the average people coz he never has to go through life that way. Something like that, if you can see my point. And sorry for my choice of illustration, I don't want offend people, but I can only think of him to use as an example to use at this time.

He can feel everything except for pain. So technically, he can feel the joy of sex. You can google up this condition. It's a real condition.

They should be able to feel some extent of pleasure, maybe not quite like how normal people perceive it. Like you know, how pain can transform into sexual pleasure for some people. Having this condition doesn't make them numb to senses. They can still feel light touch, like running a feather across the skin for example. They just can't perceive pain. But then again, I'm not a doctor or someone with the condition, so I can't tell for sure... ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭

oh, my lord, the amount of cussing here, lol. I've only read a few chapters of this & been abstaining to wait until lots of chapters have accumulate so i can binge read. I was about to cave in & start today. I don't know what happened, but looking at the reactions, maybe today is just not the right day. Lol, I'll go wait some more...

Hahah!! Yeah - for now stay away - the last couple chapters've been toxic as shit, and it looks like we're on a dicline ε=ε=(ノ≧∇≦)ノ I'd stop reading myself as i do hate to imbibe my glass in small portions like this - but aside from the bit tacky plot at the moment - everything else is SO GOOD, and its REALY HARD to stop when you're in the middle, ughh (≧∀≦)

Those of you who have read ahead and known what was going on probably already know this. What the emperor is doing in Ch 32 isn't about guilt tripping or manipulating Heun to get his pity. This scene will continue on in Ch 33, and you will see that, hopefully next week. What he is doing is trying to make things even, because he knows he could not undo his past doings. So the best he could do is to get the same thing done on himself. But he knows that whatever he does in his entire lifetime, it will never be enough because he will never suffer like Heun or the others (more on why to be revealed in ch 33). And he told Heun that. His development will continue on until we get close to ch 40. Because what he wants now is true affection, so he is trying to court Heun properly. The king is many horrible things, but he is not the kind to sneak around psychologically manipulating someone with false words or actions. He is a straight forward man, he doesn't beat around the bush. If you want to accuse someone of being manipulative, that'd be the rapist brother. I'm just trying to state the facts here, because it seems quite a bit of people are getting the wrong idea about what's going on.

Good for ya for having to read ahead of time and knowing everything. Most of us here take the chapter as it is. So you can't really blame us for not knowing about his progress. That's the whole point of reading something. If your views on characters doesn't change throughout the story then it's not exactly a good story.

For all of you fans, the series continues on with side stories, as promised by the author. Chapter 53 has come out, not sure how many chapters of side stories it will be. We'll just have to see later.

it's new, so it's not free. Lezhin has it, as I'm sure all the other publishers as well. If you want free, you gotta wait until the chinese scans pick it up, or the other korean raw sites make it available.

My, the amount of spoilers here is immense, so let me add another one, lol. People have been focusing mainly on what will happen, but that they neglected to reveal why the emperor could be so brutal in the past life, & why he can change so drastically in the current life. That little bit of spoiler is small, but really integral to who Wonje is. I would blame his particular genetic trait as the cause of his callousness first, before chalking it all down to him just being another psycho who suddenly just gotten the enlightenment in the current life. To better explain, it's hard for a person to relate to/empathize with another on a certain something when they truly don't know what that something is. Wonje is like that, he basically spent his entire early past life never knowing, & had really no way of learning it, unless he could see it directly with his eyes. He could not experience it, you see, so he could only learn by seeing. That's why he could be so brutal in the beginning, and only slowly started to understand when Heun progressively crumbled apart. But by then ofc, it's all too late. That's why in the current lifetime he actually can be better, because he learned before, and is still willing to learn now onward. He will probably never know it physically due to his trait, but he should know it on a psychological level by now. It doesn't condone what he's done, but it gives you a perspective on how & why he was the way he was, and explain the changes we are seeing now. But, what is this "trait"? lol, you should be able to guess by now, right? *wink*
