Right? Loving someone when they don't love you back, or you think they don't love you back, doesn't mean you can't move on with your life. You're right, it isn't healthy behaviour. However, it also isn't uncommon behaviour, especially for gay men in conservative countries like Japan. Thousands, even millions, live in the closet, trying desperately to fit the mold their culture demands. Why do you think so many manga have the "straight turns gay" trope. In Japan, they really do think that homosexuality is a choice you can change your mind about as if you were choosing the color socks you are going to wear. To the Japanese, homosexuality is merely a fetish, a phase or a dalliance. You and I live in the US and we are spoiled by our culture's acceptance of homosexuality and every other tumblrsex that pops up each week. Hell, for us, it's trendy to be gay, lesbian, dragonkin or non-newtonian gender fluid. That is not how things are in Japan. The government refuses to support LGBT groups, information, education or anti-discrimination laws by using a declining birth rate as their excuse. So, cowardice is common, living in the closet is common and even promiscuity is common, because the people of Japan are constantly reminded that there is no future in a homosexual relationship. With no anti-discrimination laws, a person can be fired, lose their home or even be expelled from school if there are even rumors of them being gay. So, approaching someone you had homosexual sex with in high school, after even a few months apart, could end up costing you everything if they decide to make trouble for you. So, yes, hiding your true feelings is cowardly and it is unhealthy, but in a culture like Japan's, it is also how many homosexuals have to live to survive.

You may not agree, but this is my opinion on Griffith so far:
He was meant to be the villain, because Gutts is the protagonist...But it does not mean you MUST hate him
If he was the main character people would hate Gutts. Griffith might be a demon, but he's more human-ish than Gutts.

He really isnt though. Griffith is the kind of guy that would kill everyone he knows and loves for power, and then rape and impregnate someone on the side in front of one of his comrades just cause. Im not sure y u think he is more human than Guts who has a past that actually explains his actions. Also if Griffith was the protagonist then people would root for the non rapist that wanted to kill him(rightfully so) but eventually got over it, and now just wants Caska to be sane again.

He wanted his dream to come true and when he lost everything and reached the rock bottom, he was offered to start again, recovered and with power that's stronger than an army he could have had. People would choose the power, we are not saints. That's why Gutts character is a bit unrealistic, he is above us, stronger and has a really strong will. After growing up thinking you're a burden to everyone and being blamed for deaths, nobody would have came out like this. They would be desperate and miserable.

I agree with what you said about Griffith. But I think Guts is more human than Griffith.I can feel more emotion and humanity coming from Guts than the self centered Griffith. Theyre both great characters nonetheless

Gutts is only instincts and hatred, a typical hero we will never be able to reach.
Griffith, even tho he changed drastically, still helped those spirits, saved both demons and humans by letting them in his army...All I wanted to say with it is that he's not that self-centered
But both of them are bad and good at the same time, which is rather good so yeah, they are both great characters

That is were u r wrong. No one ever said Guts was a "hero", he is a person shaped by a very fucked up world. He was delt a bad hand, he was born from the womb of his dead mother, never met his parents, was taken in by a "war group" one member of which raped him, he was constantly beat tortured in many different times growing up by men and monsters alike, and it almost seemed like every time someone showed him kindness they ended up getting killed or paying for it. Like that time when that fairy thing healed him while he was sleeping in a dungeon(when he was a kid), he woke up to find it dead since it gave up to many of its leaves to heal him, he grew up to have a pessimistic outlook on life, believing that only he would allow himself to survive, but somehow he found a group of people that allowed him to slowly grow past that(the band of the hawk).

He met Caska someone who turns out had a similar past. Pretty sure they fell in love too, and for a moment life was good(sort of).

The author himswlf wrote in the beginning of almost every chapter that Gutts' character is 'heroic'. You can't say it's not true.
He is somebody who's doing the impossible every day and when he's fighting and killong people even without the armor he is a demon. So as I said he's doing something no human could.

Griffith? He was the perfect leader, people loved him when he was alive and he "climbed the ladder to success" and that's when the only person he really trusted and was closest as a friend to him left. He was broken and made mistakes. After that when he was tortured he became weak and miserable, he lost his will to live. Isn't that what everyone would have done? He wanted to end his life, but then he was offered everything. A new start, new power, a chance for a new army and a new life. Of course he accepted the offer no matter what price. Then, as a demon he started his previous life again, only faster and easier. Remember when he was surrounded by spirirts? That time he helped the dead and living people at the same time. They had a last chance to say goodbye, so the spirits will no longer be on the Earth (which also helps Gutts. Less spirits less enemy)

Indeed. He is SUPPOSED to invoke these emotions within you. That is why he is in fact a great character, because he is well written.

I agree that Griffith is a great character that I would REALLY LOVE to kill. He did seem like a good guy and made a lot of sacrifices (for his dream) but though he was beloved he didn't really care people died for his dream and that is selfish. If he was the main character I think I would still root for Guts and wish Griffith death. I mean I get he was in despair but the reason he's dream shattered is he own damn fault I mean no one told him to bang the Princess just yet. He could have found a prostitute and there you go crisis averted. Not to mention the only reason the world is fucked up right now is because of him. He wanted it all (that is why he is the king of longing) so he fucked up the world just so he could "save" it. Unless I'm wrong. Again great character who make a terrific villain but he still a dick who NEEDS to die...ASAP...but that is probably not going to happen soon （/TДT)/ .

Dont forget that he was a weakling in front of guts before he became Femto. He had to kill hundreds if not thousands to achieve power,give up his own life and become a god. There is nothing 'badass' or 'cool' or likeable to that. i would say that only his armor(well body) as Femto is badass but thats that. I doubt that anyone could ever hate Guts he might be a damn strong man,but let me remind you that he has been a victim his whole life. And being betrayed by his own best friend who put all of his faith to him as a leader,eventually tries to kill him,makes you feel sorry for him.
