Do translation website that translates novels (especially kr/ch novel) allowed to get their translations paid?? I mean I know it’s from hard work but do they have permission to the original creator to get their story translated plus the profit will most likely be on the translator.
I’m just curious cuz there are a LOT of novel outside ridibook that are in “paid stories”
kr usually no. kr authors are very vocal about piracy. tho i do know a danmei novel translator who locks their translations and requires people to provide proof of official novel purchase first to unlock it
some danmei novel translators did actually ask for permission and author gave it as long as it's not for profit. i rmb i saw some back then, i forgot the team's name
I can only speak about korean novels and no they do not get permission. A lot of times authors find them and the website has to take the story down for copyright and they mainly go after to those that profit from translations, because that's just wrong... Even worse when the translation is just mtl, lately it's popular translations with chat gpt/other AIs, so people are paying for shitty mtl translations and even more than what they would pay to buy the entire novel on ridibooks and use your personal mtl... Any type of piracy that you have to pay to read/watch are the worst
and I'm talking as someone who is in a team translation of webtoons as a raw provider and cleaner... yes it's a lot of work, time and money but we do it because we like it and we want to share the work with others. Just like we don't owe readers anything, they don't owe us anything either if people can and want to spend money it's better to spend it on the author's original work

And it's not even restricted to BL, look up the Lucia manhwa, I had to switch to the novel because the character's proportions became so ridiculous I could not take the story seriously anymore lol
(And yes there are amazing BL manhwa where this twinkification doesn't happen but it's like looking for consent *cough* sorry, a needle in a haystack!!)
I totally agree! It's always been a gripe of mine when that happens (sometimes it even happens while the first season is still ongoing!). And I get that sometimes it's an art-style thing (they can shift after all), but that's usually not the case because it never happens to the seme or other characters seen in the manhwa.
I've seen it so many times that I only ever look for BLs with more muscular (or at least mildly toned) uke's so I don't feel like I'm looking at some sort of shotacon's fantasy (and also because they're less likely to change the appearance of the uke without it looking completely out of place).
