Please dont take this in the incest kind of way, but heejae saying "do you also treat your parents like this" to garam is definitely a deliberate choice by the author. Because heejae sees himself as garam's parent too, which he kinda is, he's garam's mentor first and foremost, and he's responsible for garam's life and career in america. That's why he never apologizes, and that's also why garam always tries to smooth things over even when he's not at fault. If you're asian and have strict parents you'll probably understand why their dynamic is like that. Because before they see themselves as lovers, they see themselves as "parent" and "child", and it's going to take a tremendous effort before they can feel like equals.

Im an addict so ive been rereading some of the chapters i liked and one of my favorites is chapter 96 during debussy's la ville aux cheveux de lin. Seeing those tender and delicate panels while listening to the piano is so magical like.....i totally get why garam kissed heejae back then. You can't not be filled with affection, sitting shoulder to shoulder with someone so thorny like heejae and listening to him play such a sad, beautiful sound.
Heejae is constantly reminded of the manager because what happened between them was one of the biggest regrets of heejae's life. So whenever heejae is feeling vulnerable with garam, he'll remember the manager like a warning sign. It's like a cycle > he feels vulnerable, be it in happiness or anger > he lashes out at garam > he's reminded of the manager who left him > he's scared that garam will leave him because of that.
So it's not that garam is a replacement, it's just that heejae didn't have a lot of people he cares about in his life, and he's scared that he'll repeat the mistakes he did with garam (whom he loves, immensely)
Also, i love that heejae always plays chopin whenever he feels vulnerable/ exposed gggghhh so beautiful.
