A realistic response to obsession is distant and uncomfortableness. It was also clearly stated that he was confused of his own feelings — wether it was a guilt or genuine care. Titiana is a daughter of their enemy, of course he would be distant to her despite feeling a subtle fondness of her. Not to further excuse his mistreatment to Titiana, but the original Titiana was indeed foolish and in a deep state of envy. They both wronged each other, but I also want them to find peace after all of the things they have been through.
Ig looking from a logical point of view you could say that, but honestly I don't think people would usually prefer to stay with people who used to think poorly of them in the past no matter who was unusual or wrong. Specifically since the main character is like a person's own pov, i can understand why many people don't like the Duke house guy
