I was kinda surprised this received so much backlash considering plenty of other poorly depicted historical based comics that otherwise continued without issue. But then the guy at the end dropped the slave master line and I was just like “Oh………” LOL ..
I respect the author for acknowledging the issue—and based on that fact, I also think they would have been otherwise able to write a good story with this premise and some tweaks. They have the ability to see the problematic aspects of their own writing—which honestly I feel like is quite rare, something many authors don’t have.
It’s a shame it was cancelled rather than re-written, but instead of being full of hate for either the problematic parts or the fact it was cancelled rather than, I have faith that their next work will be another hit!
TBH, I think it was more about backlash than self-awareness. I could be wrong, but that does seem to be the root of it, as well as why it was discontinued/cancelled; too much controversy. Not to mention they're used to making long series, so they can't afford to let this controversy affect their future longform works.

the difference in response means that more people are better equipped to recognize, react to, and condemn racism than they might be for exploitative relationships, abuse, rape, incest, and pedophilia (although i think pedophilia also gets more consistent pushback). that's because of extensive real life organizing and campaigning against racism! there have also been movements against abuse, domestic violence and rape, (remember Me Too?), but societal change is a multifaceted endeavor, and not comprehensive. there's a lot of minimizing and excuses for those things (see the litany of thought-terminating cliches: "it's just fiction" "fiction doesn't affect reality" "it's not that deep" and so on). not to mention that you can see how some people are indulging their racism and minimizing the horrors of history to defend and mourn this series, so it's not even like everyone is unanimously against racism!
often, the people speaking out against one of those issues are also vocal about the rest, but those people often get dismissed, insulted, and harassed for it (often by the same people trying to "gotcha!" with the "you guys only care about Black people and/or racism" accusation). no one can be everywhere at once, and movements require support.
with song of the wasteland, the combination of subject matter, visibility from the creator's popularity and international attention contributed to pressuring the platform and creator to change their plans. if anything, this situation suggests some tactics that people can use to address those other issues if people are aware and organized enough. people were being vocal on social media, emailing the publisher directly about their concerns, and threatening to boycott the publisher/platform. money and reputation (which affects their ability to make money in the future) are effective targets. if you're someone who actually, seriously cares about how poorly things like exploitative relationships, abuse, rape, incest, and pedophilia are used in BL/media in general, that would be the big takeaway.
