I think people started reading BL very young and although the genre evolved through the years (for the worse I would argue), it has a certain formula almost. When serious things aren't taken seriously and the author tries to make jokes out of it(there's a manga where the bottom is sold into being a sex slave and it's played like a comedy...), when the female lead 'raises' the male lead ,tbh it also happens in bl.
