jakpil likes to add small details that are hard to catch at first glance. i really liked how after dohun comes out of the restroom, he looks to the bench where his mother used to sit. though it's not explicitly stated that his mother abandoning dohun affects him greatly, it's quite obvious. he searches for what his mother failed to give him in yuwon, which will become more apparent in the future. something else i noticed is that after days at the playground, dohun looks noticeably thinner from a 3/4 angle. which like duh! but for whatever reason, i failed to notice that at first. so sorry if i pointed out stuff that was super obvious, the detail about the bench has just been on my mind for a good minute hehe (◔ω◔)
to everyone who is freaked out, dohun did not get raped. at least, that is not implied whatsoever in future chapters i have already read. if he did, i think jakpil, being the incredible artist and storyteller she is, would have made the scene much more nuanced. there is more PHYSICAL child abuse in upcoming chapters, but there hasn't been any sexual so far.
okai i swear i answered this, but it's not showing up aa! (>_<) this website has updated to chapter 70: https://wfwf449.com/list?toon=71702
dohun is my favorite character in literature EVER oki!! when i wake up, i think of dohun. when i shower, i think of dohun. when i do my hair, i think of dohun. when i walk through the halls of school, i think of dohun. when i ride the bus, i think of dohun. when i go to sleep, i dream of dohun. i breathe gu dohun.
i will forever remember reading the raws of these chapters for the first time. i've said it a million times, but unchanged man will forever have a special place in my heart. this is off topic, but has anyone else notice dohun repeating what yuwon says? like in this chapter, he says "me too" after yuwon says "me too". he's done that a couple of times before, too. does anyone have an idea of why he does that? i'm really interested in his character
For now we don’t know anything about it ? we might learn more about why he says it in such a way within a chapter or two of Dohun’s POV.
I’m guessing it’s simply their way of saying it ever since the first time they confessed their love to each other, because instead of answering “i love you too” to Dohun’s first “I love you”, Yuwon simply said “me too” (most likely due to fear of opening up too much, might be wrong but it seems like he always feels like he needs to have a foot outside, just in case so as to not get hurt if something happens), so Dohun’s copied him and said “me too, I love you”, either just as a mannerism or as a way to confirm it to himself that Yuwon loves him by simply emphasizing the declaration, or simply mirroring it for Yuwon, who seems incapable of truly opening up completely for fear that Dohun might abandon him as well one day (which he ultimately did).
I might be reading too much into this, but Do-Hoon feels like someone with antisocial personality disorder, like he truly lacks empathy and thus, it gives him this sort of alien like behavior and interactions with people (as if he's learning how to emulate emotions). He doesn't feel sorry for himself as he doesn't experience those feelings (when he gets bullied), and in the last chapter, it almost seems like he's trying to learn and mimick how feelings are supposed to be conveyed and felt (watching TV, what he wants to say is said through the TV). As if he's reflecting back more so than speaking from within. It seems he also has no problems lying to get to his goal (his goal being getting with Yu-won, having a house to live together, maybe even fabricate a whole life just to get close to Yu-won through sympathy). One thing is for sure, he's infatuated with or somewhat drawn to Yu-won, but in the way that he wants to possess him more so than truly love him (which is another argument I base my theory on that Do-Hoon is basically a true psychopath). Still, he has the capacity to be hurt and to yearn (psychopaths aren't fully devoid of feelings like often portrayed and exaggerated in horror media), and that can turn into violence and toxicity (as we saw in the chapters where they re encounter and live together). I'm guessing Du-Hoon has also killed/hurt someone for Yu-won (if the hints are correct and don't bring a huge plot twist, which is possible with stories like this) and I can imagine for Du-Hoon, it was just an act of service, a duty one does for the person one 'loves', a means to and end basically. So all these assumptions on my part lead me to believe we're dealing with a psychopath and the only way he can 'love' someone. (Obsessive, aloof, devoid of empathy, possessive, does and says anything to get to his goal)
If he really was the one who killed them or wether he had someone do it, either way, he doesn’t see it as an act of service or a "duty", if he was truly behind it all (that we’ll get to know in a few chapters in the raw), it’s a very thought through process, everything regarding Yuwon for Dohun is thoughtful (but if you haven’t read season 3’s chapters, which haven’t been translated yet, I get why you would think that way, because until then we only got a slight glimpse of Dohun’s thoughts). He want Yuwon’s happiness, whatever happiness means to Yuwon, and if happiness can only be attained by getting rid of people who are causing him pain, then he will, if it means they can finally be “happy”. He’s not a psychopath, he’s just a kid who went through traumatic experiences, that doesn’t automatically make you a psychopath, nor does he lack empathy either, i’d say more than anything he lacks empathy toward himself, because he never received any sort of “nurturing” love, besides from Yuwon. For Dohun, being mistreated, abused, is what comes as a given from people toward him.
I don’t know if it’ll be explored more than it already has, but I do believe that, in a way, the author does expect us to make the connection that Yuwon and Dohun’s relationship is far more complex than what it could be perceived, as Yuwon fills several role for Dohun, but first and foremost the role of a mother. Yuwon is even described by the author as “gentle”, he’s always been and felt protective (by nature) toward Dohun, and with time felt nurturing toward him as well, when the only thing that Dohun knows from his mother is being blamed for her own unhappiness. Dohun believes that by being the scapegoat, the one around him can find happiness, he’s willing to go to certain lengths, erasing his own needs, to fulfill to those of others, and not necessarily from the ones he loves. I’d say he’s actually quite empathetic, and highly emotionally intelligent, he just doesn’t value himself at all.
Regarding the first paragraph - about Doo hun doing everything for the sake of Yu-won's happiness, that's basically exactly what I meant by act of service (maybe duty wasn't the right word, English didn't quite English there for me lol). Act of service as a way to show love/care for Yu-won, ensure his happiness regardless of what the means to get there are.
About Doo Hun and his past, that would be my second guess (the traumatic background) as to why he is the way he is given there is potential trauma in the way he behaves, it's just that we haven't seen the extent of it or its existence yet. I also didn't attribute trauma to him being a psychopath (it's a neurodivergency people are born with), I was characterizing him without trauma in mind. Even with what you're saying about him having empathy, I wouldn't say he's a generally empathetic person. He seems to be, in his own way, towards Yu-won, but that's about it. He lives and works and breathes for the relationship with Yu-won (was able to climb the corporate ladder just to get a nice home and realize his plans from the start; or maybe he really does have the backing of his rich family, we still haven't seen what the deal is with him and his fam. Maybe he's the black sheep or bastard), which borders to obsession more so than love and care. Him basically letting people bully him almost seems like a call for help or sort of being the perfect victim for Yu-won to help rather than Du-Hoon doing it out of altruism. It feels like bait, not like he wants to be a scapegoat for people to feel better about themselves. It just doesn't make sense to me. Not from what we've gathered so far I'm the story. Again, when we learn more about his family and relational dynamics, then maybe your analysis would make sense.
From what you're describing, yeah, I kinda see the nurture dynamic between both of them and how Doo Hun latches onto it basically and wants to protect that at all costs, as well as protect Yu-won who may feel like his only true safe space in the world. It's just that Doo hun's actions against Yu-won (when he doesn't behave the way Doo Hun wants, when he isn't caged, or maybe in Doo Hun's eyes, protected) make him appear obsessive and egoistic. As far as Doo Hun putting his needs aside, some moments I do see that happening, others - the absolute contrary.
Well, i can’t debate more than I previously have about Dohun’s psychological condition, we only know so much of it. But what i can reinforce is that we do actually learn more in the third season, all that i’m sharing to you is what we’ve been shown in season three, which is why i’ve said he’s more than willing to do what other wants him to do, until he feels like he has a “reason” not to. The way he acts and feels, is heavily influenced by the teaching of his father and his relationship to his older brother and his mother. And yes, he is a “bastard”, he’s the illegitimate son of his father, many of the thing Dohun said in season 1 are true, but he does willingly choose to lie or hide the truth from Yuwon, when said truth could most likely put him in trouble or be used against him (or, his father), but that’s a teaching he also inherited from his father and his father’s assistant (who sort of was his primary educator).
(slight SPOILER, just in case you wish to wait a bit)
As for the killing plot-twist, within the latest
chapter of S3, it’s been shown that Dohun’s father asked his assistant to look into the kids (or rather find out their names, as Dohun either didn’t know or pretended not to know them) who locked up Dohun (and Yuwon) in the storage room, as the kids in question most likely knew that Dohun and Yuwon wouldn’t survive if they were stuck locked inside the storage room for the entire week end, they would’ve died from the heat within the storage room. So, it is implied that maybe his father was the one who got rid of them, Dohun may have asked his dad to get rid the kids for him (just a speculation here, we’ll find out in a few chapters), as his father did ask Dohun if he was planning on “giving back what he received” from them, (part of his "educating" was also teaching Dohun to hit back as much as he gets hit, an eye for an eye mindset), for a reason you’ll come to find out at the end of season 2.
Ohhhh, that's interesting, okay. Yeah, that background makes sense for the characterization of Dohun we've seen so far. I think he seems a bit robotic and alien exactly because he was taught under such strict, almost emotionally sterile conditions. Thanks for the spoilers lol, I like getting them when I'm invested in an interesting story
Honestly same, i love getting into a story from spoilers lmao. So more “spoiler” ?
We’re advancing at quite a rapid state in S3, we’re probably a few chapters (maybe three or four, or less ?) from Dohun leaving Yuwon. Season 3 being from Dohun’s POV, i think we won’t get back to the present until we’re closer to the end of this final season (a season lasting roughly thirty-ish chapters, it could be more so as the wrap up things nicely, but we’re already at 12 chapters for S3).
There’s still much more to go through :
- Dohun leaving for the states and his life there;
- What did he do when he came back and the reason behind him leaving the headquarters (did he know Yuwon was working there, and if he did, how did he find out, or was it all just a coincidence, or destiny, etc.) to work in Yuwon’s building (now that I think about it, it’s a crazy coincidence that Yuwon ended up working within the Gu’s company;
- Dohun’s relationship with the manager who’s constantly bullying Yuwon;
- What does Dohun knows about Sungmin as well as what went down on that rooftop and where is Sungmin at now;
- What’s going on between Dohun and his brother (like the reason behind Dohun coming back drugged in season 1) and with his father, and maybe even grandfather at it seems like Dohun’s father is still only the vice president.
I might be missing some stuff lmao, we get a clearer lights on Dohun’s attempt at helping Yuwon attain happiness, from Yuwon’s POV in S1, Dohun appears as a weird and psychotic man, but as it turns out, everything he has ever done was never rooted in malice, but with the genuine (and pure ?) intention to make Yuwon happy, and finally live happily ever after, like he believe he was destined to be. We also learn that everything he did for Yuwon, was what Yuwon himself instilled in him as the reason to attain happiness, Yuwon throughout their 2 months living together, struggled and suffered to make money for the both of them. Dohun concluded that what was missing to Yuwon’s happiness was money, but turns out in the end (of season 1), that all that really mattered to Yuwon was to have a family, i mean he’s struggling like HELL in S3, so is that even true idk, but in the grand scheme of things, all he ever cared about was Dohun.
Things that we could see in next’s week chapter (73) :
- Dohun talking to his dad about wanting to give the guys who bullied Yuwon a taste of their own medicine
- And therefore seeing how and why Dohun got that bruise on his cheek
- Seeing Dohun get pushed down the stairs by the bully
- The beach scene
- Followed by the bathroom scene and all that (honestly, i can see Jakpil either milking that one out and just pushing it to chapter 74 or simply quickly mentioning it and brushing it over, as i feel like Dohun’s talk with his father about getting rid of the boys and all that surrounds it might get the spotlight over anything "unimportant", but Jakpil did show us the storage room scene, so who knows.)

dohun is the deer. yuwon is the chestnut tree. “give back what do recieve” = “i will give my all to yuwon because he was the only one to protect me first”
