Good grief, this is painful to read. Although I feel bad for Mokyeon and his childhood experiences broke my heart, he deserves the shitstorm from Nanjo (although not the beating - any kind of violence = bad).
Having a hard life is not an excuse for making other people's lives harder or for not working on becoming a decent person. He has already met some good people and is able to recognise admirable traits in others. So technically, the groundwork is laid.
Sometimes I do genuinely think the best ending for many manhwas would be mcs and mls to die (that might be since I don't perceive death as something terrible but rather as a neutral experience given its inevitability and I also understand that many people see it as something horrible). I don't see how one can delude themselves into thinking all that was okay, come back from this treatment and continue to live with and cherish someone who has caused all their misfortune and tragedy (shout out to Steel Under Silk). No(t every) miserable mc should 'heal and forgive' and still end up with their abusers.
Could someone please make an enquiry specifically for Korean BL authors, asking only one question: Do you hate gay men?
The art is beautiful and the storyline is relatively good, but the uncontrollable and explicit r*pe scenes make it unreadable. They are not depicted as disgusting or dangerous. It's straight-up romanticisation of domestic violence in its most brutal form.
(I, at this point, have developed my own conspiracy theory as to why so many stories romanticise abusive relationships.)
P.S. stop sending these crazy mfs to Germany, send them to mental health facilities or even better, to jail.
I started reading yaoi a year ago and had such a lucky start with Semantic Error, Countdown to Love (still one of my faves), Reunion, Define the Relationship, Here U Are, Our Sunny Days, The Dangerous Convinience Store, Honbul, even my first guidverse and omegaverse yaoi stories were so heartwarming. My first red flag manhwa was Low Tide in Twilight (recommended by tiktok BTW, never trusting it again) and I still hate it with everything I've got. It's getting so hard to find good stories without rape and I'm not even saying that problematic topics should be completely omitted or anything, just don't romanticise this shih and don't make mc-s stay with their rapists.
I also noticed that many seasoned yaoi fans say, that new readers complain too much about rape and if one can't handle it they should stop reading yaoi altogether. But wtf, how did they got so desensitised??
I don't get their mentality either. As you said stories need to have different themes but the sheer number of rape turned lover trope is astounding. I wouldn't want that trope to happen to anyone else. so as i empathize with the characters i get frustrated when i read such stories. I hate jinx and kiss me liar and similar stories bc i doesnt show much progress on both characters and the power imbalance is sickening. And through in a week ass, spineless little thinks for uke and it gets me irritated for the rest of my days until I can find something like dangerous convenience store. But at the same time, steel under silk(albeit them going in circles) and Hounds of sisyphus has something more than just rape and sex.
A bit late to the convo but I started in 2020, my first read was Cherry Blossoms after winter which was a good start for a beginner bl manhwa reader, it was not A rated then and was pretty tame, it turned 18+ around season 3 ig (I am not reading the new arc as of now because it isn't as good)
After that it all went downhill, I read yours to claim (which aged like milk), Killing stalking (not a romance but physcological and disturbing which is a no no for someone who wasn't even 16 back then), BJ Alex (again, glorifying coercion).
There were many other bad japanese Yaoi manga i don't remember the name of with concerning premises.
I also had found a few gems like Sign, Here U are, Salad days, The new Employee and ten years I loved you the most (I have still not recovered from it and I don't think I can ever read it again, not because it's badly written but because it's so beautiful in its tragedy that I simply can't handle it again)
But yeah, i didn't know back then that some of these glorified r*pe and coercion, so there's that.
They didn't get desensitised, I'm a pretty seasoned Yaoi reader, they simply translate it into their own little fantasies, those kind of manhwas are simply FAP material for readers who like to imagine themselves in such scenarios, if you go and take a look at thier lists it will be filled to the brim with such trash.
Oh yeah, Kiss me Liar is the worst of the worst offender, the fact it shows and points out r*pe but completely normalises it, along with downright forcing the mc to carry the baby to the point said mc had to run away and because the mc is just that spineless, he ends up keeping the baby instead because why not tie yourself to an abusive bastard? I quite like Hounds of Sisyphus because the seme and uke are both kinda like red flags and it has more to it than simply sex and ownership, the mc seems to be good at manipulation too and is a little crazy in the head which I like.
OMG YES LIEK PEOPEL APAPRENTLY JUST USE THIS GENRE TO ABUSE MEN??? i mean yeah probably from nromal perspective ... someone might say that this is the genre where they can have men beg ont heir knees BUT SOME OF US ARE DEVOTED YAOI READERS WHO ACTUALLY WANT FLUFF. WE DONT WANT R@PE ON MEN RATHER NOONE DESERVES THAT??? authors gotta make more fluff like happy Twogether, My guildmember nextdoor, Our sunny days ... THEY ARE ALL SO GOOD AND GIVE THIS GENRE JSUTICE please stop with manhwas like jinx, tree without roots, passion, codename anastasia.
THE FACT THAT THE LATRER ARE THE ACTUAL MAINSTREAM MANHWAS IS SICKENING???? PLEASE PLEASR PLEASE JUST SHOW ME FLUFF I HATE TS
Kinda weird seeing my own thoughts process.
Dont even get me started on these tropes. I can understand if the trope is a plot point (╬ ̄皿 ̄)凸. But there's a huge gap between plot point and putting such scenarios out there's just to get reach of some people who thinks abuse is love and redemption is when the seme realises that he did wrong but wont admit it(apologising is reserved for ukes only) and still gaslights the uke into loving him for the asshole he is. The seme's are psychos and uke's are a cum dumb who gets into the sex after the seme forces him the first time and the uke goes.. "what os this feeling I haven't known before? This is too good that I might even forget that this started with dubious consent".
I can go on.... but writing this much is damaging my brain cells. Gaaaagh im getting annoyed. Rn i gonna go to the home page of mangago to find some fluff but as finding a needle in a haystack is hard so is finding fluffy yaoi in there.
Can we build a community for good, story driven yaoi with dramas and high stakes and fluff and enjoying life or being depressed or anything other than toxic blackhole semes and spineless ukes. I was atleast gonna build myself a haven of stories that I liked which do not contain toxic semes. But as im such a lazy lady, ive only managed to add maybe 5 mangas to it(my insta acc) and then I made another account here to go through all my readlist and pick the good ones and to share it to the other acc. And I only managed to shares our sunny days...
TBH a lot of people are starting to get really tired of the toxic/dark romance trope and are calling out Manhwas that are actually overusing those same harmful tropes and I've seen such shitty manhwahs here that used to be rated 9 and above which are now rated 8 and below which means people are coming to thier senses which is good to see, recently there is a push towards more healthier relationship dynamics and a clear distinction between phycological manhwas like Killing stalking (which is NOT ROMANCE) and actual romance (like Cherry Blossoms after winter).
Maybe there is hope.

The character development and redemption are almost on a par with those of my boy Zuko. 10/10
In my head I decided that the side story is just different manhwa.
