ahhh this was such a beautiful, complex story full with nuance!!!! obviously there is some noncon/dubcon because of the curse but i don’t think it’s fetishized at all — it’s meant to make you uncomfortable.
the protagonist (rix) often blames himself for the curse and believes he deserves the pain, but the author takes great care over their characters and lets rix discover his own self-worth at his own pace. he discovers what emotional love is, physical love, romantic love, familial love, etc. — all things he had closed his heart to because of childhood grief and trauma. by the end, rix is such a well-rounded, fleshed out character that has grown and matured as an individual.
the love interest (nuah) is also such a rich character!!! since they are supernatural, they have a difficult time understanding humans, especially their emotions. nuah makes a lot of mistakes but learns and matures alongside rix. it’s clumsy, awkward, and beautifully written.
without the curse and without rix being an unreliable narrator, i don’t think this story would have the same depth — we’d lose the foil that rix is to himself. the author changed the story multiple times because it was what the characters wanted, and i really value when authors let the story play out naturally even if it doesn’t follow their original plan.
and the art!!!!!! the art is stunning, just gorgeous.
absolutely recommend this if you’re looking for a mature, complex story that you can really immerse yourself in— it’s a long one but so worth it!!!
i hope the author releases some side stories in the future but the ending was very satisfying.
