I think it's just a lost translation there because I saw some panels with weird or misplaced translations. It's usually happened if you use machine translation (like G*o*o*g*l*e) because Japanese tend not to use a distinct word for gender: like Koibito for lovers can be translated as girlfriend or boyfriend if the listener know already what gender the speaker talked about.
