Actually I thought it was more that he didn't really understand the value of the money and just turned it in cuz he's a kid who found something lost, and everyone else made it into a huge thing. But this chapter does explain somethings.
It was always odd that someone actually left a bag of visible money lying around. And Ian's imposter syndrome makes sense, like he's so overly anxious about the whole angel thing.
NOT that this makes him less of a good kid, but I get why he's pushing himself THAT hard now.
