Penelope really does treat Eclis like an idiot. She's always so surprised when he shows any kind of personality because she's already casted him as her escape route who only has affection for her.
She genuinely just doesn't see him as a person. Like I get WHY, but understanding her doesn't really change the fact that she took in a slave and proceeds to treat him like a slave. Not violently, but she's certainly manipulative.
Everything she does is so he will love her, and despite his affection being the highest, I think he's very much aware she doesn't actually love him. Which is why his affection will never reach 100%.
And Penelope is a bit too self absorbed to give Eclis the same consideration that she does to the Crown Prince, so she doesn't understand why his affection won't go higher. She's still very much seeing Eclis as just a game, even though she's starting to treat others like actual people.
Like I said, I get her. But she's still so very flawed when it comes to her intentions with Eclis.

I don't care what she does to the rest if the fam, or others because they are independent and can take care of themselves. Eclis is almost entirely dependent on her because she chose to make him that way. Like it's not an accident, she literally is doing it on purpose.

The only way she'd be considered a villain to him would be if she was doing that out of pure boredom, which is, again since you forgot, not the case.

I completely agree. MC is an incredibly flawed character, which is honestly the main reason I keep reading. She’s not this perfect goddess who set out to do things out of the pureness of her heart— she’s simply looking out for herself by any means necessary. She’s not a Mary Sue. She’s selfish, cold, and manipulative.
Story-wise, I love it. I don’t understand these people in the comments giving you shit about it, but yeah, she DOES treat Eclis like he’s sub-human. It honestly gives me chills when I see her interact with him. I think people are just so used to MC’s being virtue signalers and the “obvious” good guy that they assume EVERY motive is good or well-meaning. It’s okay guys, it’s legal to have a flawed character. And it’s okay to see something they do and be like: “Res flag!” lol
I’m just saying, IF there’s such a thing as consequences for the MC in this story, I REALLY wouldn’t be surprised if her behavior towards Eclis backfired on her. Trying to play games with someone that violent and utterly dependent on you, ESPECIALLY when they have nothing to lose? It should not end well at all. This story wouldn’t be -ish if they just swept this toxic relationship under the rug like it’s okay. I’m really excited for the future!
I've always been hoping they DON'T follow through with the novel's plot regarding Eclis and the OG FL. Mostly cuz I feel like the Big Bad reveal was totally random.
But also, I felt like they did that so Penelope never gets confronted on her treatment of Eclis. It felt a lot like "Penelope never needs to apologize for how she treated him because he turned out bad anyway". Never mind that Penelope was a huge part of his Villain Origin Story, no matter how accidental it was.
That said, I also don't know how the novel ends because I stopped reading when things got weird. I'm sure Penelope and the crown prince defeat the Big Bad and live happily ever after.
But you're exactly right. Penelope is NOT a mary sue. Her character is very flawed. Even if she's understandable, she's still wrong. My frustration I think also stems from the feeling that even though Penelope is not a Mary Sue, the plot treats her like she is supposed to be one. Does that make sense?
She's human, that's it. A human being stuck in a game where her character always dies no matter the road taken, yall really be making her to be some manipulative strategist that she's not, she's not doing that coz it's fun for her, and wanting to survive is neither selfish nor cold, it's not like she ever promised Eclis an unconditional love, she told him she was his master and she'd take care of him which she did. Just because she's not always at his side doesn't mean she sees him as a "sub-human", you wouldn't be able to think of everyone if you were in her shoes trying your best to not anger any of the characters to avoid dying.

I mean Eclis doesn't make it easier.. It's like Penelope trying to Penelope or something.. Both of them keep so much to themselves.. They have never been honest to each other.. The status difference is there between the crown prince and Penelope too (plus he was crazy since the beginning) but they develop a healthy bond gradually..
Eclis and Penelope's personalities just don't mesh well, is what I feel..
