No one died. Long story made kinda short (still longish ngl) gramps went off the deep end and threatened taesung's mom's life and even kidnapped her in order to keep Bom in check. Proceeded to mentally, physically and emotionally torture Bom, possibly sexually too but not confirmed, and then released him cause he believed Taesung had given up. Bom lived a second life, Taesung found him, and sexually abused him tbh (that scene was...something). Gramps hadn't given up and kidnapped/lured Bom again and Taesung came running. Gramps threatened to have Bom raped by this mercenary that he hired and had been helping with everything (which is where it was kinda insinuated that, THAT, might not have been the first time). Taesung stops everything by saying he'll obey. Makes a plan and gets Gramps put in prison, but to keep Bom safe he stays away and entrusts Bom's safety with a friend. And came back when everything was taken care of.
Basically - Haebom and Taesung split bc of some old geezer who threatened Haebom. This whole story shows their pain after splitting and you can see that in every chapter one of them cries. It broke my heart to pieces

so as a story i enjoyed it but i do not like a lot of whats going on IN the story if that makes sense. i cant get past the fact that the ml yooseong is a cruel and abusive sociopath. not to say all sociopaths are inherently cruel and abusive but this dude, coupled with his vast wealth and toxic ass family, really is a fuckin trip. and at first i liked how green flag the mc hojin was bc he seemed like a nice and considerate partner, but then you realise he’s just severely emotionally wounded and all of his green flags are a result of his obsessive response towards his youthhood traumas. and he pretty much got caught in wooseongs web of selfish exploitation of power and wealth and then got stockholm syndrome bc his life was literally the pits prior to his kidnapping and social isolation. so in the end they suited each other well but thats only because their traumas and toxicity interlocked and forged a codependency. it was painful to watch hojin end up in a relationship just like the one his mom had with her husband, except hojins partner has no intention of improving, and hojin has no intention to leaving him for his own wellbeing. so even tho his hatred of abusive people meant he wouldnt reach out to his own father for help despite his dire situation with debt collectors, he commits heart and soul to a dude who beats the shit out of him on a whim while emotionally and financially manipulating him. the only word for this is tragic i like that in the side stories they’re like “we end up happy in every universe uwu” like girl, which one??? i need everyone to go to therapy NEOW!!
i did like how it ended up with grandfather assuming blame bc he really was the source of his family’s collective mental unwellness. and im glad that hojin’s natural cleverness was what saved them all in the end bc wooseong was truly only full of bad and inconsiderate ideas from the jump and his ego made him double down instead of at any point consider hojin as a human being, and a capable one at that. agg that he couldnt even say “thank you, im glad it worked out” at the end. but that would be out of character lol (rolls eyes).
the side stories got on my nerves too like why are we acting like everythings fine? he never apologized for hurting hojin over and over again in that omegaverse one but theyre all acting like its all hunky dory just cuz he’s pregnant?? we’re just gonna get married? since when?? bitch you’re literally still engaged as we speak. EW. im not a fan of that. i hate rude ass people so wooseong is not my cup of tea as a character. this whole thing was a wild read lmao. i actually am liking the guideverse one better, likely because wooseongs personality comes across differently when he earned his money by being op instead of inheriting it along with a superiority complex based on nothing by eugenics. but im not done with it yet so theres still room for me to become a hater
anyway, these chaebol stories are fascinating psychologically. this one was well written and the characterization was solid. i still enjoyed reading it despite my beef with the characters which means that it was pretty good lol and i think i could be ok with the way the characters ended in the main story but then got pissed off again in the side stories lmao
i dont mind the second couple but i am confused. the brunette is too tsundere. i cant tell if they are together or not like did they confess? are they dating now? i was surprised to see it was the end already, i didn’t think they settled anything yet lol. and i want to see the main couple again… hopefully the epilogue has a future family scene :)

i think the mom was abused/neglected as a child, grew up and was sent by uncaring parents to marry a cold and uncaring husband who was harsh and lashed out (bc at the time yaetatsu was heartbroken and also healing from his own trauma growing up with his abusive dad). She continued her affair with the person who she actually loved, got pregnant, and probably didnt know what to do or if she’d be kicked out or what. she wasnt, she had the baby and her husband said he would claim it and that was probably the nail in the coffin for her that he would never truly love her or care for her, just be cold and play his role of head of household. when her lover asked her to run away she probably was thinking that was her best shot at living a life with even a smidge of warmth. idk why she left her own child - altho i suspect based on that tiny bit in the field that her current lover and husband is not as financially stable or secure and maybe she thought leaving the baby in an actual house she could inherit would be better? but overall likely bc it would be too hard to raise this child on the go like that, and bc she didn’t have faith in her own parenting abilities. also, post partum depression and psychosis exist! she may have been in a space hormonally that leaving her child behind made perfect sense (and sometimes its actually safer for a mother in psychosis to not be with her child unsupervised until she has healed, so maybe this was for the best!). but it seems like she was always thinking about o-ten, even if just as a cloud of guilt and worry over her head, wondering if she left her child to grow up in a household like the one she grew up in, cold and distant and unloving. so when she and her husband have tension at home she thinks “ah! this is my chance to go rescue my daughter from her potentially shitty home at chieda-ya, and maybe that dynamic shift will overwhelm any of the problems we’ve been having at home too”. (not sound logic imo but its been established that she’s not a great decision maker). or maybe (im gonna say most likely to give her a small benefit of the doubt) she’s been so worried about her child all this time that her husband is sick of it and thats why they fought. maybe he told her “if you cant stop thinking about her then go get her! stop being so damn sad all the time!” idk lol. so she leaves her husband mid fight to go find o-ten and then meets yaetatsu who wont let her see him. as a child of neglect and abuse she might have assumed the worst: maybe he’s locking her daughter up in a back room somewhere, what if she’s not well at all, what if she too is being forced to pretend to be happy with life while living in misery? so she freaks out and runs through the house wanting to see with her own two eyes how her child is. she cant at this point yet imagine that her daughter would be living a joyful and loved life, it literally never occurred to her that this wasnt a rescue mission. and then she sees the truth and decides to bow out. o-ten is living a happy life with her adopted father and she might not have so much joy in the moms household. she also probably got hit in the face with shame/self-hatred as she fully recognized that SHE was the cold, neglectful parent who abandoned her kid, not the man she used to be married to and hated so much. she became the parent she hated. so she decides to leave, likely forever, but then runs into o-ten in the hallway. mom had to make a quick decision about how to explain her presence while trying to consider o-tens baby mind and emotions, and she’s already been described as being a little flighty, unstable, and not good at decisions. she probably thought it was better to say o-ten’s mom loved her but is no longer around than to have to emotionally burden her with the knowledge that she is alive, didn't love her enough to keep her, and will never return after this day now that she knows she is safe. so she chose to close the door forever to not string o-ten along.
this is my character analysis and the only way she makes sense in my mind. i can have empathy for the character and her circumstances and emotional state of being but i do think she has poor judgement and her reactionary impulses hurt people. its probably best that she can just have confirmation that her daughter will be ok so her mind can be at peace on that front (beyond the guilt/shame of abandoning her kid, which she’ll probably have to sit with for a while), and then leave them all alone forever.
You’re right. It’s heavily implied that she never knew her parents’ love, and because of that she does not know how to be a mother/parent herself, that’s why when she saw how happy O-ten is, she decided to leave and never come back again.
absolutely masterful analysis, lovely to see effort put into understanding the roots and thoughts of o-ten's mother and the motivation of her character, what goes on behind her appearance n role in the narrative. we love to see critical thinking skills here!
