I assume people who use the "it's just fiction" statement don't understand that fiction can easily affect reality in many ways? Whether that be negative or positive, affect their emotional or mental? As a bisexual female who happens to enjoy yaoi, especially the extremely dark and twisted stories that many people find problematic, I do agree with this.
Romanticizing and normalizing a things that are real problems in the world often starts with fiction, but I don't think it's only yaoi that has these issues.
