When I talk to my friends about the topic of sexual orientation I've always quite hesitant. Like I still am not sure of what I am, maybe that has to do with never being in a relationship before, but I just say that I'm "straight" because it's easier to just say than to face possible judgment from my family.

Like I’m fine with reading smuts and stuff about either genders cause idc... but the idea of seggs irl or even a romantic relationship is just gross and awkward... I don’t really know myself

I would say it's because people are mixing up the terms "sex"(biological aspect) and "gender"(self expression).
Sexuality refers to attraction to sex.
Heterosexual- attraction to the opposite sex from yourself
Homosexual-attraction to the same sex as yourself
Bisexual-attraction to both sexes
Asexual-without attraction to the sexes
