From what I've read and been told by friends that have visited Japan is that some places like local bathhouses often refuse to serve customers with tattoos because in some towns and cities it's still associated with criminals. I think if you are just visiting bigger cities it probably wouldn't be an issue. As for your parents it's good to respect t......   2 reply

I'm Asian, Hmong to be specific, and amongst the older generations of my culture, my tattoos, piercings, and ever changing hair color automatically marked me as a "bad girl." I remember asking one of my 8 year old niece if she would ever want any more piercings or tats and she told me her mother said only "bad girls" do that. Ironic since her mothe......   reply

I live in the us and while tattoos are generally accepted the area that i live in, they are still viewed (by older generations mostly) as trashy. Some businesses won't allow you to work there because of visible tattoos or they make you cover them. I have one on each forearm and one on my upper back and one on the back of my neck. When i first got ......   reply

Some people will have prejudices against everyone and everything... Some companies won't hire people with tattoos, if there is the chance of having to handle customers. But that's just if the tattoos are easily seen. This is gradually changing, as peoples view of what being competent means changes.   reply

Canadian here. I don't feel like people have that much prejudices against tattoos here as long as it's in the usual places like arms, legs, back... Having tattoos on your face, neck and hands might be less acceptable for some people, though. Of course, that's how it seems to be in my area. I can't talk for the rest of the country. '^'   1 reply

in japan specifically, it's not seen as a good thing, because it's tied to yakuza. i don't think anyone would freak out over it, but if you did go to japan with a tattoo, and you were somewhere like on the streets or at a park, etc, it would be best to cover them up. i live in the US, so it's widely accepted here. i don't even really know of anyone......   3 reply
