How do you feel about Yaoi & the misrepresentation of LGBT community in media?
Hi, I'd love to hear thoughts on this statement: "Hey fun fact! Fetishizing gay men is disgusting and if you’re a fujoshi/ yaoi fan you should stop and realize you’re not representing or helping mlm correctly by posting your “uwu trash sinful gaybies otp” and only harms the community". I know this kind of topic has already been asked again, & again. I don't mean to start a shit storm cuz I know that can get ugly quick but, Im often really unsure where I stand on this. I'd really appreciate hearing other viewpoints.
it's fine to read and enjoy yaoi, as long as you're aware it isn't reality. like a lot of manga and anime, it's a hypersexualized representation about 90% of the time, and that's not even including all of the abusive and freakin weird tropes (i mean all the pedophillia phew) but regardless it's a form of media, and manga, no less.

I'm gay and I enjoy yaoi. I don't take it very seriously, it's light-heated or angsty romance with the occasional smut. It's rare for a yaoi manga to seriously tackle LGBT issue and I don't really expect it anyway. It's fantasy.

There are a few problems I have with yaoi and how it present LGBT community, but nonetheless I still like it.
One of the biggest problems are the roles during sex scenes in yaoi. I've read maybe 2 or 3 yaoi mangas that characters were versatile and not exclusively top or bottom (I read a lot, you can check on my profile). I myself am versatile, my...... 2 reply
Yaoi fetishizing gay men is a percieved problem, not a real one. Yaoi readers aren't only straight girls. In fact, it originally had nothing to do with men, and was created by queer women to bypass gender roles and explore other types of sexuality. The real problem is that, like most other manga genres, nost content is supremely mysogynistic. 7 reply
I am of the opinion that as long as the reader knows it is fictional and should not be reenacted in real life then people are just assuming that yaoi fans all like to fetishize gay people. I think that yaoi does largely misrepresent the lgbtq+ community. It is used to appeal to women who enjoy male/male relationships, which is made glaring obvious by the fact that the genre “bara” exists. Most girls who read BL/Yaoi aren't "fetishizing" gay relationships. They enjoy the idea of romance, but most don't look into straight romance because when there's a girl involved they start to self insert. Let's first say this: fetishizing is never a positive thing, no matter what we're talking about. So yeah, I think some people can obsess over yaoi and get a really wrong idea of the world it should represent.
