Is Romance Storytelling Getting Worse, or Am I Just Tired of the Same Recycled Plots?
Is it just me, or has the quality of storytelling really gone downhill lately? I'm not even reading most stories anymore. I usually just check the comments to see how awful the plot is, and it's the same shit repeated over and over again. There's barely any substance to the story, and sometimes the art is the only thing that saves it, but even that only keeps me interested for one or two chapters before everything goes downhill again.
I mean, there are good stories, but the ratio of good stories to bad ones is ridiculous. It's like we get one good story for every ten bad ones. And it's not just BL; if we look at shoujo and straight romance stories, they're weirdly repetitive, too. It's the same misunderstanding trope, enemies-to-lovers trope, the same omegaverse shit, the same MLs and second MLs, and the same love triangles over and over again. Nothing genuinely new or interesting is being added to the story. Misunderstandings that could logically be resolved in ONE FUCKING CHAPTER somehow get dragged out for fifty or sixty chapters for absolutely no reason. Like, how are we supposed to stay invested when the entire plot depends on characters refusing to have one basic conversation?
There used to be a time when I'd get excited whenever a new story dropped, but nowadays, I barely feel that excitement anymore. Sure, there are still good stories out there, but even some older, genuinely good stories are getting darker for no fucking reason, with unnecessary rape and other disturbing shit being added to the plot. I'm dropping those, too. I genuinely don't feel like reading most stories to completion anymore. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed this, too?
A lot of modern romance stories prioritize marketable tropes and instant gratification over actual storytelling or complex writing. Authors often will find a trope that's popular and slap it onto two objectively attractive characters, and call it a romance story. A great chunk of these stories nowadays lack proper characterization, worldbuilding, a...... 3 reply
