I think if you're interested in writing a story with an overarching narrative and themes, the constitution of a genre is irrelevant because it's secondary to what you're trying to achieve. I think some people will find that with most substances (minus psychedelics), the worse your mental health is, the more you will enjoy the high. I've basically been addicted to escapism my entire life and struggled with mental health and substance abuse since I was 15. I had to be air lifted to a hospital at 17 for alcohol poisoning and almost died......   reply
