If you truly want to know why they're like that, I heavily suggest you look into Japan's history and culture. It's no wonder it's more normalized there. I'm guessing the reason why they continue to do it is just because of tradition? ┑(￣Д ￣)┍ idk. Just ask. If they say yes then Yay! but if they say no then you best look for another friend. Its better to ask and get a clear answer than just continuing to suffer in silence.
