I mean, the story definitely isn't the best—I admit that. The characters aren't particularly deep, and the writing isn't exactly top-notch. But blaming her for not standing up to her bullies is pretty brazen and arrogant. The thing is, my childhood bully was my best friend; she abused me—both mentally and physically—for a whole year. Yet, I stayed with her because I was more afraid of being alone at school than of what she was doing to me. I suffered immensely—mentally and physically—but that fear of being alone as a child or teenager (and the fact that kids can be absolute sh*t sometimes) meant I didn't fight back, even though I was suffering. I even went to her house when she called, knowing full well I’d suffer there. So, am *I* to blame for being bullied? People can be afraid of many things. If someone has had an absurdly shitty life full of abuse and their self-esteem is practically non-existent, it’s no wonder they don't stand up to someone treating them like sh*t—especially when they know no one has their back. She probably didn't say anything to her husband or anyone else because she thought it wouldn't help—that they’d just say, "What can you do?"—much like her mother did. And even though she’s the Duchess and the other person is just a maid—well, she likely felt powerless because she was a foreigner and the maid was a long-term, permanent employee. So, it’s arrogant to tear her down for that. The story’s writing quality is one thing, but the fact that she couldn't fight back isn't unrealistic. That doesn't make her pathetic, especially since she did learn to stand up for herself a bit later on. I mean, if you don't have anyone in your corner and have been mistreated your whole life, how on earth are you supposed to stand up for yourself?
