It's not about forgiving, it's about understanding.
No one is excusing his actions nor forgiving him. We are just seeing his reasons and seeing WHY he became the way he did. He truly is broken and once had a good heart and soul.

I think you can see him differently. See him as two different people. You're empathizing with a kid, and you're not with the clinically insane grown up. There's clearly a reason for his mental decline. It's a story this is a character it's always better if characters are multidimensional, because you can have separate opinions about them.
