Your comment contradicts a lot of their previous interactions and I think it would do you good to go back and read through the story slowly and pay closer attention to these characters and their actions. While the webtoon obviously isn’t as detailed as the novel, I don’t believe it’s done a bad job at bringing the story to life so this obvious misunderstanding cannot be cleared up.

Maxi's father abused her and presented to the world the fake appearance of a precious young lady calm and passive. Riftan fell in love with that image and has been upset at every sign of Maxi straying from that.

He get upset everytime she wants to do something, learning magic ? He forbade it. Using her power to heal ? Forbidden. Going out to the festival ? Didn't like it. Letting her accompany them to war because she is a capable mage and healer ? Forbidden. Voicing her opinion about the conflict with her own father ? Denied. Asking him to not escalate the matter ? Ignored. Letting her stand against her father ? Only accepted because he learned forcing her by leaving her behind does not work. Letting her help resolve the situation ? Never in a million years.

All he does is scream at her, yank her around constantly and hate everything that make her happy : magic and being useful to those she love. He is constantly upset that she isn't obedient, submissive and doesn't stay home doing nothing. He doesn't love Maxi, he love her body and his idea of who she should be, he hate everything that she actually is : someone who enjoy freedom, who like being busy and wants to help people.

All of what you said is a very surface level interpretation of his responses. I agree he fell in love with her image but I disagree he’s upset just because she strays from it. His first impression of her was that of a princess sheltered in a tower with no knowledge of the world and it was very easy to assume pampered by her father.

When the married and he met her in person, she was a fragile young girl who lacked the courage to meet anyone’s eyes and stumbled over her words every time she spoke. It’s not like she was this strong willed young woman exuding confidence. This is why I believe it made Riftan feel the need to take responsibility and protect her from a world she had absolutely no experience in.

Yes, she wanted to learn magic but her first attempts resulted in her overdoing and it affected her health. Yes, she wanted to go to a festival but has no clue how to interact with people and be wary of strangers and scammers. In both instances he was wary for very understandable reasons but relented.

As for letting her go to war, you really cannot be serious in thinking badly of him for that. He may be wrong about her being pampered but she was definitely a sheltered noble lady who was painfully shy. I’d accuse him of being heartless if he was gung ho about his wife who never been in a so much as a small altercation going to war after only a few months of mage training.

She has talent but I wouldn’t act like she’s an expert and it was 100% reckless on her part to sneak her into the front lines with so little experience and no protection. It honestly showed her immaturity the way she was ready to risk life on impulse and not think of the consequences, such as her being a distraction to Riftan and his knights because again, unless he was heartless, he had to focus more on her protection when he discovered her, instead of winning the battle they were still in the middle of.

All that being said, the overall impression Riftan gives me is overprotective, not possessive. And I can empathize with his sentiments and understand how he might be feeling even more overprotective because he was already feeling like he failed to come off as reliable and caused his wife to worry enough to put herself in critical danger.

He must feel it’s also his fault for failing to notice the true relati onship between her and her father and therefore letting her experience further abuse while still processing the grief of miscarrying their child. Now after going through that and failing to shield her or multiple occasions, he’s expected to just shut up and watch her disappear for years into an unknown place full of strangers. The guy was orphan that crawl his way up from the very bottom. Let’s give him some grace that he doesn’t know how to express his chaotic emotional state in the calmest, most rational matter.

Don’t just look at his reactions but the whole picture. Take in mind the settings, character, and motivations of everyone involved when drawing a conclusion

Dragging someone around when you believe you’re keeping them out of harm’s way and sheltering them from a world you don’t know they’re ready to take on is not something I would translate as violence and control. Again, I believe in showing his character some grace when I consider the time period and his background as someone that spent their whole life fighting amongst rough men and has little to no experience being around women besides a princess that set herself up as one of the guys.

Not saying it’s exactly the right behavior but understanding the interactions he used too, I honestly think he believes he’s being gentle with Maxi by comparison and won’t know otherwise until someone intervenes which they won’t. We also have to consider the setting being similar to medieval times when women were considered property. The people in the verse, including Maxi herself see Riftan as doting compared to the usual men in power and technically he is.

I’m a novel reader and I can go into detail about what I believe Riftan loves about Maxi and what she loves about him but because the WEBTOON was on hiatus for so long, I’m kind of fuzzy on what was shown so far and what wasn’t so I don’t think I should start listing to many scenes as references. I’ll just say his initial feelings began as a childhood crush from meeting her in instances that Maxi doesn’t recall and believing she shared his loneliness and was also kind.

That’s why he worked himself to death to rise in the ranks and be someone worthy of a high standing noble woman. A lot of misunderstandings come from him wanting to give her the things he believes she’s used to because he’s insecure about his past (not because he’s trying to doll up a trophy wife) and her not knowing what he’s thinking but as we’ve seen they’ve begun the process of understanding each other’s true nature a little more.

I say you have the right instinct when it comes to Riffan being uncomfortable with Maxi’s character development but it’s not because he wants her to shut up and do as she’s told. It’s because he’s plain and simple scared. Scared that she’s going to get hurt AGAIN in a place where he cannot protect her and scared she’ll come to realize he’s useless to her because he keeps failing to be her shield. These insecurities makes sense when we again think about the time period they were both raised in.

They grew up in a world where a husband should be financially stable enough to provide a comfortable life for his wife and also strong enough to keep her out of harms way. So it makes sense if he’s wondering what purpose she has for him if he can’t do those things for her especially because as far as I remember at this point Maxi hasn’t expressed her feelings. Little mini spoiler, I kid you not, this man doesn’t even know that she followed him to war not out of a sense of duty and wish to prove her capabilities but purely out of love for him.

Just a little add on, I think it might help you process the story better overall if you prioritize the fact that it’s a medieval setting and don’t judge the characters with modern day morals

You are conflating intentions and legitimacy. What he is doing is perfectly logical and normal for his character and I do understand that he believes he is doing what's best for her. But all you have described is the reason why he is doing it, it explains his actions but it does make them right.
His actions are wrong. You aren't doing something for someone's sake when you are actively going against their wishes, you can believe you are but that doesn't make it true. You just said you wouldn't translate dragging someone around as violence and control when it's literally physically controlling someone's location by force. If he broke her legs so she'd never leave the castle and could never be harmed outside again would you also say it's not violence because he is doing it to protect her ?

People thinking it's normal and not knowing better doesn't make something less violent. Harming someone physically or emotionally is violence even when it isn't inflicted out of malice. And "it's medieval so the moral wasn't the same" is a key to understanding people's reactions, it does not make it legitimate or okay.

The only thing you managed to list as what Riftan like about Maxi is "she looked lonely" btw. You haven't listed anything from before they even spoke a word to each other. You didn't list anything about her he showed appreciation for, I'm guessing you didn't want to list the only thing for which he did : her body.

I’m not saying his reactions are perfect since such behavior would be illegal in modern day for a reason but since that isn’t the case in this setting it feels unfair to describe him as violent or controlling just because he tugged her somewhere. You can’t judge a character while completely ignoring the environment he was raised in as a factor. I’d have slightly altered opinion if this took place in modern times in a society where men are educated better but that’s not the case. His intentions behind his actions matter more in this particular setting.

One of the reasons why it’s important to consider the morals of the time period is because it decides the level of impact each character’s decisions actually hold. You’re so focused on initial reactions to certain situations while completely ignoring the outcome despite what we know of the rules of their time. In a world where woman are considered no better than property, could you really say a man is controlling or violent when it’s in his power to employ corporal punishment and force Maxi to do as he pleases but he ultimately decides to let her have way every time unscathed?

This is an era where he legally has a right to beat his wife if she gets remotely out of line. He actually could break her legs to keep her home if he wanted to and the law would be on his side which is kind of why we’re at this current arc where the powers that be are more concerned about him harming a member of their ranks than that a woman was beaten. The thought of beating Maxi into submission never once crossed Riftan’s mind even though no one would have the power to stop him.

As for the just liking her for body argument… let’s use our context clues. The man can marry whoever he wants with his achievements. While it’s actually out of Maxi’s power to divorce, he could easily initiate it, especially after the miscarriage, and then he could actually go and find some beautiful, obedient woman who will jump when he says jump. Honestly, in this time period, he could stay married to Maxi for the whole marrying royal blood prestige and bring in mistresses if he felt like it. Now knowing all this plus that it’s been said Maxi isn’t even considered a great beauty in this world, does it really make sense that the only thing Riftan is after is her body when he doesn’t act on any of these options that are available to him? Doesn’t seem that shallow to me all things considered.
