Not necessarily, you got it right, tops insert and bottoms receive, but bottoms are `on top` when they're positioned on top so people call it topping sometimes, but you'd usually never hear someone call a top who's positioned down 'bottoming', because it's exclusive to receiving, maybe that's how your friend got confused 1 reply

You had it right. The top is the one who inserts and the bottom is the one who receives, regardless of sex position. If your friend is thinking of dom and sub, they're still wrong.
