What's really derailing this story, for me, isn't that Jin has a close friend he relies on who's secretly in love with him, if that was all this was. That's not the problem, it's a bog-standard cliché plot but meh, we all read plenty of that. The massive and overwhelming problem/mistake is that Jin and Alex are way, WAY too physically intimate. If it's that ridiculous "Foreigners are more touchy-feely" thing, the mangaka is just doing that trope plain wrong. Yeah, friendship can have much more physical contact in 'Western' countries compared to Japan, but not like this. There's a huge difference between friendly physical contact, and intimate physical contact like Alex and Jin. Why the fuck would you have them hugging and holding hands and getting so close to kissing distance ON A BED, if you weren't deliberately giving them a romantic, sensual physical vibe?? It's way beyond the realms of, "Oh look, what a typical yaoi misunderstanding where Jin has no idea of his touch-feely foreign friend's feelings, and jealous hijinks ensue!" The mangaka is making Jin so unlikable with this, and it's understandably turning readers off Hamura and Jin's relationship. If it's not deliberate, then it's a pretty bad job being done on this story.

I completely agree with everything you've said, but it's a bit different from the point I was making. In our sadly still patriarchal culture, in situations like you're describing men are objectifying women and pushing their own sexual desire onto women (because women are objects for men to look at and want, not full thinking, feeling individual subjects). Showing skin or being naked does not mean someone has any kind of sexual motivation towards a person looking at them, of course!!!
But Tachibana's boss was saying that women don't feel sexual desire from LOOKING AT nakedness, which is definitely untrue as a generalisation. The difference is, women aren't taught by society to feel entitled to just have whatever they want from men, and that men should be sexually available for them. So they're far less likely to push their own sexual desire onto men. It's not that we don't feel sexual desire, we just don't grow up learning to automatically negate men's humanity and make our own desire the priority.

It's not a big age gap in terms of years, but there is still a big gap here. High school is a very closed, insulated world compared to life after high school. I'll do the obligatory #notallteens in case people really need it, obviously there are exceptions, but the fact of the matter is that most high school teenagers are still much more like kids than they are like adults. This MC is one of them, although he is a lovely, responsible, kind older brother. And that's totally normal! It's not a criticism of him or of teenagers. On the other side, yeah some people in their early 20s are still way more like teens than they are like adults. But that's not the way this older guy is portrayed. As others have commented, he's being portrayed as mature and experienced.
I understand teens being interested in adults, that makes total sense since they're finding their way into adulthood. But adults being into high school teenagers is iffy at BEST.
If we get the story switched to be from the older guy's perspective, and it turns out he's actually desperately acting mature after having his sibling's kid suddenly left with him and HE'S also just trying to play the cool, mature adult, then things might feel more balanced. But as it is now, there's an imbalance in maturity, experience and therefore power in the relationship, and that doesn't sit quite comfortably no matter how cute it is.
