Overrated manhwa
I genuinely think BL fans overhype certain manhwa way too much.
Before anyone comes for me, I actually like every single manhwa I'm about to mention. I rated most of them pretty highly. My issue isn't that they're bad, it's that people hype them up as if they're flawless masterpieces, and after reading them I was honestly kind of underwhelmed.
Unchanged Man is probably the one I have the least criticism for because I really enjoyed it. However, I don't think it's nearly as unique as people make it out to be. It's a well executed psychological BL, but plot wise it still follows a lot of familiar tropes. The execution is great, but I don't think it's groundbreaking.
Die in My Arms disappointed me the most. I kept hearing people say it was one of the best toxic BLs ever, but the characters just weren't written that well in my opinion. A lot of them felt one dimensional, and the story leaned on cliches instead of developing its cast. It definitely has emotional moments, but emotional doesn't automatically mean well written.
The Boundary of Delusion is another one I don't completely understand the praise for. The amount of dubious consent gets brushed off way too often, and while I know it's a dark story, that doesn't automatically make every aspect of it good writing. Also... was I the only one who thought season one was kind of a mess? It felt like it kept building things up without delivering satisfying payoffs.
Yang Illwoo and I is probably my hottest take. I liked it, I really did. But I genuinely don't understand why people act like it's one of the greatest BLs ever made. I've seen better representations of depression and suicidal thoughts in other manga and manhwa. The story is emotional, but by the time I finished it I was just sitting there thinking, "That's it?" It felt well… underwhelming. Maybe it just didn't resonate with me the way it did with everyone else, but I don't really see what makes it stand out above so many other stories in the genre. Another thing that bothered me was the MC's decisions. I didn't really understand why he kept going along with the antagonist and sleeping with him when he'd been established as a pretty headstrong character. I know trauma can make people act in ways that seem contradictory, but I don't think the story did enough to make his choices feel believable.
Then there's Backlight. This one frustrates me because it had so much potential. The MC is constantly assaulted to the point where it starts feeling repetitive instead of meaningful. The trauma is there, but it isn't explored deeply enough. And the brother's backstory honestly didn't make much sense to me. We're supposed to believe he had this massive psychological impact on the characters, but from what we're actually shown, he barely did anything compared to Taegu. If anything, Taegu felt like the far more impactful antagonist. I wish the story had spent more time fleshing out everyone's motivations instead of expecting readers to fill in the blanks.
I honestly don't know if it's because there are barely any genuinely great BLs coming out these days, so the decent ones get put on a pedestal, or if people are confusing emotional impact with objectively good writing. Sometimes it even feels like people hype a series so much that any criticism gets dismissed immediately.
Again, I like all of these manhwa. I just don't think they're the untouchable masterpieces people make them out to be. You're allowed to enjoy something while still acknowledging its flaws.
What are some BLs that everyone seems to love but left you feeling underwhelmed? I'd love to hear other opinions. (=・ω・=)

I wanna recommended you a manhwa just because I'm curious on your thoughts about it. I'm not sure if you are going to like it. The BL manhwa is Sunnyside Daycare Classmates. Me personally season 1 I liked the most.
I was reading this actually, I think it’s really good it’s just a little confusing to get into
It has a structure where every season it's a different MC, and I just thought that was unique and cool thing for a BL. I think it would be cool if more BLs did something like this bc me personally I hate when the MC in stories are put on a pedestal compared to other things in the story, so changing the MCs where readers are not following and favoring one character is something I like about it.
Night Song, the art is really good but the story is horrible for me.
Painter of the night. They said it’s a masterpiece. I was flabbergasted when Nakyum whipped out his dick to masturbate while watching Seungho fuck someone. That was a weird read for me and I feel bad for Nakyum. I find the story poorly written in general.
Bj Alex. Why the story is like that.
Roses and Champagne. The beginning is good for me and it was really entertaining. But why he suddenly shot Lee Won and raped him while half dead?
Anyway all this series is said to be peak and masterpiece. I shouldn’t have trust those internet users.
Also don’t attack me for this lmao I cry easily. I also read some unhinged series but those four aren’t for me.
lost in the clouds - underwhelming ending.
home far away- its good dont get me wrong but idk, maybe i overestimated the 'sadness' people were saying it'll have.
i hate backlight and boundary of delusion and i refuse to read it idc if its "amazing".
imo BWAT stories and MXTX stories do not do it for me maybe bc i'm too skeptical of age gaps ie. i am not joking when i say i do not FW age gaps. i dont like it and neither do i understand the appeal of it. that being said, i am not aversed to it given the story has clear tones of the it not being ideal and if a story is f*cked up then i will be ok with it, but i rarely want to read that kind of stories. thats js my personal opinion and there are too many people on this site who go crazy for an age gap couple so what can i say lol. i stay at sidelines. MXTX you will never make me have an opinion of your stories. she is the most popular danmei author but i js cannot get into mdzs or tgcf idk why. i love the characters individually i js dont enjoy the stories as much as i thought i would enjoy (based on how "peak" peope called those stories). i like mu su li when it comes to danmei works in general haha. meatbun's stories as NOT for me i have accepted it. i do not like erha or bab. i despise them personally, if you ask me. yuwu is something i want to read i dont think i will like it bc someone said the hurt-to-comfort ratio is skewed as hell lol.
Jinx, behind the stage, Passion,BJ alex, code name Anastasia these are only hyped cause of face cards and good artstyle. personally my least favourite is define the relationship people literally kiss feets of ash like he is some kind of Yearner nope he ain't and u can't convince me otherwise
I know I've been reccomeding it everywhere and to anyone but at this moment the most interesting bl ive seen from execution to writing is no more eurydice it's this extremely unique story never been told before but it's so fucking good in my opinion. I don't wanna over hype it tho cuz i don't want anyone to feel disappointed in it :(
I was actually gonna do a list of BL that deserve to be hyped up more and add that lol just didn’t want to type too much.
