Homophobic people in fandom spaces

why are there so many openly homophobic people these days in fandom spaces?

I’ve seen so many people say the term yaoi means fetishization. Same with the term yuri, which is honestly just stupid.

They get mad when you ship non canon same-sex characters, because apparently “they don’t have chemistry”, “they’re only best friends”, etc. but never say that with hetero ships

I’m in the strangers from Hell fandom, and a lot of people have been making homophobic remarks saying u can’t ship the mc with same-sex characters bcuz it isn’t canon. (Specifically moonjo) ??? like huh? then they bring up they’ve been in the fandom for years so now all of a sudden that makes them entitled to tell people what to do. I honestly don’t see a problem with any non-canon ship as long as it’s legal.
