like i understand including rape in stories because it IS a real thing that happens, but it bothers me when authors eroticize or fetishize it instead of treating it seriously..
Because authors don't use their fictional stories as social commentary on real-life issues! They know how to separate fiction from reality, have been creating stories rooted in what their genre was originally made by and for (I'm assuming you're talking about Yaoi so I recommend looking up what Yaoi actually means, what it stands for, who it's made by, and who it's made for), and don't dare to criticise others for producing content that was not made for them. If you are not comfortable with authors who portray things differently from your personal beliefs, it's probably not made for you! There are lots of works out there (a lot of nonfiction too that tackles social issues you are passionate about with the dignity and importance you desire) that Might Be made for you, so I highly suggest checking them out. And no disrespect to you but the way you’ve just become so hypnotized to think they only write rape in stories because they can separate reality from fiction is crazy because this is exactly how they want you to think about the same reason why they’ll make a stories about high school minors mind you have sex
I understand your position, but I don’t agree with it. Narrative is far more impactful than you give it credit for. whether it’s yaoi or not, poorly written smut or a well crafted plot. All of it shapes how we perceive rape. No, it probably won’t completely flip your worldview or make you genuinely believe rape is acceptable. But it works on a subtler level, small shifts in what feels acceptable or desirable. Fantasies that once seemed off limits start to feel normal. Rough sex, certain power dynamics, or blurred consent in fiction can become more tolerable or even appealing. You might argue that none of this really changes us. But I’d say that even small moral shifts tiny adjustments in what we fantasize about or tolerate still count as real change. And that matters
I’m not sure if this is real but one comment mentioned that their company forces them to add those even tho don’t wish too. Some authors are also forced to add to their series . Paskim for example refused to add when pressured to do. Of course I have no way to confirm if this is true.
But honestly, some readers also prefer series with rape. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know either. Some even find those scenes extremely hot?
you’re right rape should not be romanticized or treated as anything other than what it is.. a horrific thing that happens to people and absolutely should not be used as gratification or something to have happen to a character and continuously justify it and encourage it by having them stay with their so called love interest. I’m not sure why people don’t understand that even if u seperate fiction from reality, the way rape is constantly sexualized in yaoi causes it to become more palatable to readers which desensitizes it and makes it to be more excused and thirsted over instead of something that should be punished and shunned. this (unsurprisingly) does affect your psyche and the way you treat real world things who knew? Sorry for long text
Ive read this somewhere and I agree. Authors doesn't write based on social morals or what not, but just if the scene is hot. These mass produced fictions are after all soft porn. So yeah call fetishizing or whatever, but in 'porn' rape doesn't really mean that much. So it's best not to think the plot too deeply, and the quote "separate fiction from reality" holds a lot of impact on how one should consume an entertainment media.
This is a blanket response so I hope everyone can look up what Yaoi actually means, who it's made by, and who it's made for! It is completely distinct from queer media that focuses on real-life issues. Yaoi is escapist fiction rooted in s*xuality, however it is perceived by the creator and its audience. This does not mean we or the creators condone problematic behaviours in real life, just that you are barking up the wrong (fictional) tree. It's like asking why people write script for grotesque noir films when they "can just write romantic comedy"! Genres exist for a reason, you are dipping your toes in a sandy ocean and expecting your skin to meet a squeaky clean pool! (●'◡'●)ノ
Someone who only reads straight manhwa and a handful of mainstream BL I can count on one hand should probably learn more about what Yaoi actually is before saying things~ it reeks of something something phobia and a lot of ignorance. A quick google search would tell you to stay away from Yaoi if the content is not made for you. Don't like? Don't read. It's easy to stay away from other people's business but because others want to be moral chauvinists (you can google it too like how you can google what Yaoi is) so bad, they keep bringing up topics they aren't privy to and are pretending to be morally white whilst also consuming said content. Silly, silly. That's either homo something something phobia, misonyny, or just a really bad case of I gotta meddle on someone else's business! (▰˘◡˘▰)
"I don't like your lollipop."
"Okay?"
"It's made of sugar and it's bad. I don't like sugar."
"Okay...? Then don't eat my lollipop...?"
"I don't like your lollipop so you shouldn't eat your lollipop."
"But it's my lollipop? Why are You licking My lollipop?"
"It tastes bad. Don't eat it. I hate lollipops and I have diabetes."
"It's my lollipop and I don't have diabetes. Why did you eat it if you have diabetes...?"

you’re mentally stunted, ive read hundreds of BL and i know they can be written without rape. ive recently been only into straight fantasy sure, but ive had this account for over six years and all my completed manwha are gone since you clearly looked at my profile lol. saying yaoi can be written without rape is misogynistic or homophbic? are you hearing yourself? and who said im morally white because i never did? so are you agreeing that rape filled bl is on the darker side of morals then since you said im acting ‘morally white’? your response is full of sooo many guesses and assumptions about me and ur really going so hard to defend fictional RAPE its almost comical
If you can't read dark fictional media and walk away with your morals still in tact, then how old are you? If you can't even grasp the concept of don't like, don't read, then what level of maturity do you have? Username 'mommy' and a silly little straight manhwa reading list... with an opinion over Yaoi calling other people mentally stunted while you refuse to accept the fact that if you come to dark fictional spaces knowing there are dark tropes and criticise it for having... suprise! Dark tropes, then something is inherently wrong with you. You sound like an entitled white woman who just can't help herself meddling with other people's business. Please, 'mommy' Karen, learn to read the sign outside the door. No one invited you in. ┗( T﹏T )┛
I don't. That's a whole different sentence that never came out of me, user Yall gotta die. OP asked a question and I answered with facts because Yaoi is escapist fiction, not social commentary. It will contain dark tropes that are not made for you. You're like that one person on the internet with the "I like waffles." and "Oh, so you hate pancakes?" personality. Silly.
exactly!!! i have no problem reading stories with controversial things but why are we acting like its a cute mistake that happened before the couple gets together and normalizing it??? like to use a popular example Killing stalking is a dark manhwa with rape themes but the whole story is mean to be dark and morally bad versus other popular bl where the bottom gets raped, is hurt and then marries the top like what are we doing???
