What makes a story “well written”?
What actually makes a story “well written” to you? I’ll read something that’s objectively kinda messy, but something about it still allures me and I rate it high, even when other people write it off as bad. So what’s your bar for well written? And if a story isn’t well written, why does it still pull you in anyway?
to me, the main factor is how human the character feels. characters that feel real because their goals, conflicts, and actions arise from a coherent psychological foundation, if you're capable of making me feel for a character and relate the concept of a human to him, I'm sold on the show. I can recognize something being well written while realizin...... 2 reply
There's a buddhist saying "the finger pointing at the moon is not the moon". Maybe that's what a well written story does: it never gives you the whole truth, only enough to make you look for it.
You see, there's something alluring to a story we read and makes us recognize ourselves in people who never existed. They hold up a mirror without making ...... 3 reply
Diversity, good world building, and characters that don’t feel like cliches, stereotypes, or made for fan service. Unfortunately only a few things meet my standards cause of racist people, homophobic people, and just that fact that so many people make their characters have the same looks with same archetypes a million other stories have, and/or c...... reply
For me, it's when the characters are really fleshed out and have clearly been thought through. Like, they each have their own mannerisms, identities, flaws, and how they then in turn interact with the other characters and all of their own complexities makes me really enjoy a story. I don't know, but I just find myself drawn to those types of storie...... reply
In my opinion, a story is well-written when the flow is easy to follow, the storyline makes sense, and it keeps you interested enough to continue reading.
But I think it also depends on your perspective and the genre you're reading. For my case, different genres have different standards, so what feels well-written to me might not feel the same to ...... reply
To me personally, the first thing that makes a story well written is how developed the characters (especially the main character's thoughts and emotions) and relationships between the main characters and others are. I'll even read a story with a plot that is not really that interesting as long as I have character interactions I'm looking forward to...... reply
A well written piece is one that makes you think beyond what you've read as it assists you to unlock new horizons and seek points of view you've never considered. A well written piece is one that urges you to search for this specific topic that piece was revolving around. A well written piece is one that pushes you to learn and develop new ideas an...... reply
"A well written story is what i think is good."
That's from one of my fav webnovels haha. There's no universal metric for it. I have read objective masterpieces and garbage books/fiction/comics, and what i can agree on is that every one i stayed reading has a pull or an interest of mine piqued. And for a lack of a better description, every well wri...... reply
